ALINA

& NOAH

location köln        genre short film  |  fiction  |  drama

Women are expected to see children as part of their future, preferably their near future. Talking to my friends, I notice that this is an issue for them. Either because they don't want to have children, haven't made up their mind yet, or because they do want children but feel pressured to find a partner they can achieve this goal with.

It's an issue that fascinates me as it is both taboo and discussed shamelessly at the same time.

Women who don't want to have children are still underrepresented in media and art. With ALINA & NOAH, a short film from my second year at Macromedia University of Applied Sciences, I want to contribute to changing the narrative. Alina is a woman who has to figure out what she wants for herself before she can even think about telling others. Her and Noah have been trying for a baby for some time when she realizes that it actually goes against everything she wants for her life. The film follows her and Noah as they try to figure out what they want for themselves, for each other, and for their future.

What's special about this short film is that we see the scenes in reverse order. It begins with the two of them waiting for their pregnancy test to show a result. The viewer doesn't find out what has led to this moment until later.
I deliberately decided to make this the structure of the film in order to leave room for interpretation. Many will probably find themselves assuming that Alina and Noah are hoping for the test to be positive. A reflection of society's expectations.

I've written the script, directed and produced the film and, with Simone Ullbrich and Konstantin Gerlach, found two great actors for this project. ALINA & NOAH is currently being edited by Chris Rojas.
